Is ChatGPT down?
Check the ChatGPT feature that failed: a conversation, Work task, login, search, or file. The official card covers the components named on OpenAI Status. If no matching incident is listed, compare a short new chat with the conversation or task that failed.
No active official incident reported for ChatGPT
The checked components have no active notice. Your account or region may still have an issue.

Official status
OpenAI separates ChatGPT conversations, login, file uploads and other functions in its status page. Check the component named in an incident against the part of ChatGPT that failed for you. An API incident is not automatically a ChatGPT web incident, and a green overall indicator does not prove that every account is unaffected.

Public user reports
The report card links to posts from the sources it names. Compare the date, product and symptom with your own error. Only the provider can confirm an official incident. If a source cannot be checked, the card says so.
These are posts from the sources named below. They are user reports, not confirmed service incidents.

What to do now
If an official incident affects your feature: Save any unfinished text or file you still have. Open the incident link for updates and retry the affected action after the provider reports recovery. Avoid repeatedly submitting a task that may already have produced an output.
If no relevant incident is listed: Try one short prompt in a new chat. If it works but an older conversation will not open, use Unable to load conversation. If the answer stops or disappears after showing progress, use Error in message stream. Note whether the same account and prompt fail in the browser and app. For a generated file that will not open, request a fresh file and follow the download guide. Keep the time and exact message if the problem repeats. If file creation says “Read-only file system,” use the Errno 30 guide; if Python or uploaded-file execution reports caas.internal.errors.ClientError, use the ClientError guide. A “Chat memory full” notice concerns the current conversation.
If official data is unavailable: Open OpenAI Status directly and keep the exact error, time and client you used. The specific guides below still apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
OpenAI Status says ChatGPT is operational. Why do I still get an error?
Public status reports known incidents in named components; it cannot inspect your account or one conversation. A new chat, another client, and the exact error help narrow the problem. Use the message stream guide if a reply stops, or the conversation guide if a saved chat will not open. A resolved incident from an earlier date does not confirm that your current error has the same cause.
Does Download failed mean ChatGPT is down?
No. OpenAI also documents file links that fail because the generated file is no longer available. Ask for a fresh file, then check the ChatGPT download guide. If the status page lists a related file incident at the same time, follow that incident too.
Can this page check my account or a specific model?
No. It reads public status sources, not your account or private usage data. A model or account may have a problem even when no matching public incident is listed.
Are public posts proof of an outage?
No. They show what users reported in the sources we could check. Look at the post date, product and client before comparing a report with your error.
