Claude Code connection lost mid-response

Claude Code lost its connection during a task. Check the last completed tool action and local file changes before retrying, then compare service and network signals.

Quick answer

A broken response does not tell you whether a tool ran or a file was already changed. Inspect the working tree and the last completed tool result before asking Claude Code to repeat the task. Save the exact message and time; then compare a short request and the affected Claude component on the status page.

What to inspect first

  1. Open the project directory and inspect changed files or the current diff. If the task sent messages, created branches, or called an external tool, check that result too. Do not rerun an action that may already have succeeded.
  2. Copy the final visible tool output and error text. Note whether the failure happened before any tool ran, after a file edit, or while Claude was drafting the final response.
  3. Try a short request after the client reconnects or restarts. If it works, continue from the verified state: tell Claude Code exactly what has already changed and what remains. If failures repeat, compare network conditions and Claude Status.

What reports do and do not establish

One GitHub issue describes many truncated responses across the reporter's own sessions, including unattended runs; those numbers are one user's logs, not a platform-wide rate. A separate network analysis attributes that reporter's mid-response losses to observed TCP resets. Neither establishes the cause of every connection loss. An API 529 overloaded_error has its own 529 guide, while an expired sign-in session belongs to the OAuth guide.

Frequently asked questions

Will Claude Code resume automatically?

The message alone does not promise that. Check the client state and the working tree; continue only after you know which actions completed.

Are file edits rolled back when the connection drops?

Do not assume a rollback. Inspect the files and diff before retrying.

Should I restart the client?

A restart is a reasonable single test after saving the prompt and current work. It cannot undo a tool action that already ran.

Does this mean Claude is down?

A current official incident covering Claude Code would support that conclusion. One local or network failure does not.
