ChatGPT file problems: upload, read, create, or download?

A working chat does not prove its file task worked. First find where the file stopped: upload, reading, creation, or download. That single distinction saves you from repeatedly asking for a link when no file was created—or re-uploading a document that ChatGPT can already see.

ChatGPT Files Not Working? on a pale blue and lavender background

OpenAI's upload guidance describes the files ChatGPT can accept and the limits that depend on plan and file type. Its error guide treats generated download links as another problem: they can expire quickly. Those two help pages cover different ends of a file task. Neither can inspect your individual conversation.

Start with the symptom you can see

StageWhat you seeFirst useful checkExact guide
UploadAn Unknown error appears and no file is listed in the chat.Keep the original file; compare one small supported file.Unknown error uploading a file
ReadThe filename is under Sources, but ChatGPT says it cannot access the file.Ask it to name the file and read a specific heading.Files in Sources but unreadable
CreateChatGPT says it made a file, yet no usable output exists; a tool may report a write error.Check the actual attachment and any Read-only file system message.Read-only file system
DownloadAn attachment or link exists but opening it shows Download failed or File Not Found.Request a fresh file and test its link soon after generation.Download failed / File Not Found

The table is a way to choose the next check, not a diagnosis. A file can get through upload and still fail at reading. A tool name such as file_gen:generate_document says a document-generation step may have run; it does not promise an attachment. A generated_file_link field may be visible even when the link itself cannot be opened.

What OpenAI confirmed, and when

OpenAI recorded a ChatGPT file-upload incident whose status-page timeline says some users had trouble uploading files or getting ChatGPT to read uploaded files. The official timeline marks the incident resolved on November 3, 2026 (UTC). Check the event time and affected component before applying it to your case. It does not establish an ongoing outage or explain a later, isolated download failure.

For a generated link that fails, OpenAI's troubleshooting page recommends using a recently generated file and checking VPN or proxy interference. Ask for a new attachment, open it promptly, and confirm its contents. If a new link fails too, note whether it happens in another browser or app. Restarting a stalled client is a reasonable single test after saving the prompt and any partial output.

What people actually reported

In an October 2026 OpenAI Developer Community report, a macOS user saw files under Sources while ChatGPT said no attachments were available. Uploading from mobile worked for that user, and those files remained readable on desktop. Another person in the same thread said mobile uploads did not help. The useful lesson is to record which client performed the upload and whether a new file is readable; changing devices is not a universal repair.

A separate upload-error discussion includes users who could upload some PDFs but not others. Re-exporting or printing to a new PDF helped some of them, while others still encountered errors. If you try it, keep the original, inspect the new PDF locally, then make one comparison upload. The thread does not prove that every Unknown error comes from a damaged PDF.

Before you retry a long file task

Save the original file, the instruction you gave ChatGPT, and the exact message. Check whether there is already an attachment or a partial result. A blind retry can leave you with several files whose contents differ, without telling you which step failed.

Then change one variable. For an input problem, compare a small supported file in a fresh chat. For a reading problem, ask for a specific heading. For an output problem, ask the app to attach the file explicitly and check that it opens in the requested format. For a broken download link, request one newly generated file; trying a ZIP is a reasonable comparison if a direct file repeatedly fails, but it is not an official all-purpose fix. Keep the output that actually opens.

Common questions

Why can ChatGPT answer normally but fail to handle my file? A text reply and file handling are different parts of the task. Check the stage in the table. If the file is visible under Sources, ask about its content before concluding that the upload was usable.

Should I keep uploading the same document? Check whether it is already listed. If it is, ask for a narrow reading test. If it never appeared, compare one smaller supported file or a fresh export; repeated uploads without a result check add little information.

Will asking for a new file or ZIP help me download it? A fresh file may provide a new link when an old generated link has expired. A community discussion in Chinese includes ZIP packaging among users' suggestions. Try it as one comparison when a direct link repeatedly fails, then open the replacement and check its contents. A ZIP cannot repair an earlier file-writing failure.

What should I keep before opening a new conversation? Keep the original input, prompt, any partial output, the exact error, and the filename or link shown. A new conversation is a comparison; it does not carry every detail of the old task by itself.
